How to Choose an Age Appropriate Escape Room

04 Dec 2018

Are you looking for a way to pull the family together and away from devices? Escape rooms could be the answer. They're an immersive adventure for the whole family.

Yet not all escape rooms are age appropriate for all kids. Before choosing an escape room adventure, it is important to know the age appropriateness of the setting and plot.

Of course, age is only one consideration. The maturity and cleverness of your child are also important, which is something only you know best.

Minimum Age Recommendation for Escape Rooms

The minimum age for any escape room is 10 years old, although some have a minimum age of 12 years old. There are several reasons for this recommendation.

  • The children must be old enough to follow instructions and rules of the game.
  • They must be trusted not to handle off-limits props and handle other props appropriately.
  • They should be mature enough to participate in the immersive experience. If they are unable to work together to solve the puzzles and the adults do all the work they are likely to become bored.

Different escape rooms also have different plots and themes. It is important to choose an escape room that is age appropriate for your child. You don’t want to put them in a situation that will seem too spooky or give them nightmares later on.

Tips on Choosing an Age Appropriate Escape Room

Most escape rooms are labeled for a minimum age for participation, but this is only a guideline. For example, not every 12-year-old will be well suited for a harder adventure.

Three tips to choosing the right escape room:

1. Difficulty

Some escape rooms may be rated for children 12 and older but are very difficult.

When choosing an escape room, you want to be sure that it isn’t too hard for your child, otherwise, they might get frustrated and give up. You are the best judge of how good your child will be able to work with you to solve the puzzles and escape the room.

2. Interests

It is a good idea to choose an escape room that is aligned with their interests. The more interesting the story is, the more likely it is that your child will truly have fun.

  • If your child is really into fairy tales, the Alice in Wonderland adventure might be appropriate.
  • Jumanji might be more up their alley if your child likes video and board games.
  • If they like a funny story and have a good sense of humor, Grandma’s Master Plan might be right for them.

3. Team

Who will be participating in the adventure? The more adults or older teens in the group, the harder the adventure can be as the adults take the lead.

If there will be more children than adults, or several children with just one chaperone, an easier adventure that the kids can immerse themselves in would be better.
