Good room with tech and puzzle issues
Going through and updating my old reviews as we move them over to our new stack rank website, TheRoomRank. Check it out to see how these rooms compare to the other 125+ rooms we've done across the United States.
Jumanji - 4/5. Jumanji had some tech and puzzle issues that prevented from it getting a higher score, but the set (especially the progression between the rooms) was good enough for it to be a good room to check out as an enthusiast.
(Original Review)
I've done over 90 escape rooms across SF, Seattle, New Orleans, and now finally LA. 60out's rooms seem to be of variable quality, but we heard decent things about jumanji and so wanted to check it out.
Jumanji - 4/5 (One of the better escape rooms in the local area).
Jumanji is an escape room focused more on set/immersion than the puzzles - think Quest Room if you've ever played those. I haven't personally watched the Jumanji movie, but I assume that the plot of the room followed the movie. In the room, you will get to choose a character to play as, which gameplay wise, gives you certain "powers" that enable you to interact with certain parts of the room. This was pretty neat and thematic, since most of the characters specialized in a certain role, and they had to perform certain puzzles that thematically required that role.
However, they didn't do as much with this as I would have liked, since the puzzles were on the weaker side. Most of the puzzles were of the fetch quest variety where the entire puzzle is just searching for one piece and placing it in the right spot in the room. Many of the character interactions just involved being near various props and pointing at things to open them. There were a couple of puzzles that were more complicated, but I would have liked to see more of those in the room. Some of the puzzles and tech pieces were also pretty fiddly - there were a couple of occasions where we knew how to do the puzzle, but things were slightly off and we had to fiddle around with it to get it to work.
The set was well done and had some good moments spread throughout the room. The story had a reasonable amount of plot points for an escape room: there were two particular points in the room that I thought was pretty neat from a story perspective, which is better than I can say for a lot of other rooms. There was a decent progression since the room was split into distinct phases, and you had differing goals for each phase of the room.
All in all, if you like rooms that care more about sets than puzzles like Quest Room, you'll probably like this room (though I still prefer Quest Room, which has crazier moments). Don't expect too much puzzle wise, but come for the sets and unique character setup, and hope that the game doesn't break down as it can be a bit fiddly.
The room goes from linear to non-linear back to linear, so enthusiasts probably want to bring 4 people. Beginners can bring ~6ish if they want.
Personal Stats:
Escaped in ~45 mins in a group of 4 enthusiasts.
