How to Pick the Best VR Escape Room for You

22 Aug 2022

Virtual reality (VR) is a relatively new addition to the world of escape rooms, but is becoming more popular and extremely quickly. With a broad array of VR escape rooms on offer, it can be tough to pick which one to play, especially as you rush to experience every single thing that VR has to offer!

Whether you’re looking for an adults-only terror-fest or a more laid-back experience with the family, there’s a VR escape room that’s perfect for you. In this article, we’ll review tips and tricks for how to pick the best VR escape room for your group. (We might even provide a few sneak peeks into the best VR escape rooms as we go!)

Here are a few important considerations.

1. Who’s on your team?

How many? First, the number of people on your team will determine the games you can play. Like in a traditional escape room, having too few people in a VR escape room can make it difficult to escape quickly as there are fewer people to solve puzzles or notice clues. On the other hand, having too many people can make puzzle solving too chaotic or can leave people out.

Most VR games are designed for relatively small groups of people in order to avoid crowding and confusion (both personal and technological). Here at 60out, all of our VR escape rooms can be played with 2–4 people. If your group is larger than that, you’ll need to split into groups in order to have the best experience, or play a traditional escape room instead, many of which can accommodate more people.

How old? While escape rooms are great for the young at heart, some VR escape rooms may be inappropriate for the truly young. Make sure to check the minimum age rating for the game before you sign up. For example, many VR horror escape rooms are only suitable for kids ages 16 and up, while Jungle Quest, a magical “outdoor” adventure, is suitable for kids ages 12+. VR escape rooms are not recommended for anyone aged 10 or under.

It’s also important to take into account the mix of ages. If your group is mostly adults, consider playing a slightly more difficult (but still age-appropriate!) game in which adults can guide those who are younger through the puzzles. If you’re playing a VR escape room for a children's birthday party, however, it’s clearly important to pick a game in which the kids can take the lead.

Finally, it’s important to take into account any physical limitations your group may have, as some VR escape rooms require more physical activity than others. Talk to a game-master to make the best choice.

2. What are your interests?

From action to science fiction to horror, there’s a VR escape room for everyone. Picking the best VR escape room for you is simply a matter of understanding where your interests lie.

Here are the broad categories you can choose from:

  • Action: Action games like Mission Sigma and Prince of Persia feature exciting thrills as you chase down a goal — from disarming a bomb to stopping an evil Magi.
  • Sci-Fi: Science fiction VR escape rooms often feature a new, technologically advanced world. For example, in Huxley, you’ll experience the year 3007 A.D., in which humans have been entirely replaced by machines.
  • Horror: Horror VR escape rooms are all about the fear factor. Whether you’re exploring a haunted cabin like in the aptly-named House of Fear or exploring a spooky old monastery like in Sanctum, the heightened experience of virtual reality escape rooms is the best way to experience fear like never before.
  • Fantasy: Like any good fantasy story, fantasy VR escape rooms feature mystical, magical happenings. For example, VR game Alice, based on Alice in Wonderland, allows players to explore a magical world while freeing Wonderland from the villainous Queen of Hearts.

Within each category, simply pick the adventure that interests you most!

3. How “hard” do you want to go?

Whether this is your first ever escape room experience or you’ve been playing for years, there’s a VR escape room for you. But to pick the best VR escape room for you, it’s important to take difficulty ratings into account. After all, you don’t want to leave your very first escape room feeling discouraged, and you certainly don’t want to fly through one that’s too easy in only 10 minutes!

All our VR escape rooms are ranked from easy to medium to difficult to expert to help you find the challenge you’re looking for.

4. What are other people saying?

Many of our VR escape room games feature reviews from past players. If you’re still feeling unsure, you can always look up reviews of the game online. Because all VR escape rooms are developed by dedicated game developers like Ubisoft or Arvi VR, rather than in-house at a specific escape room establishment, there are plenty of sparkling reviews online to help give you a better sense of what’s in store. But make sure to avoid any spoilers!

That said, a VR escape room experience is still unique to the location you play it in. VR provides our game designers with more freedom to create even more exciting experiences! At 60OUT, you’ll put on the VR headset and explore, all while our game masters are there to help if you need it.

5. Talk to us!

The very best way to find the best VR escape room for you is to talk to an expert — that’s where we come in. Here at 60out, our employees can help guide you in the right direction based on your group size, interests, and difficulty preferences. Whether you’re here for a corporate team building the event, a birthday party, or even a first date, we can help you make sure everyone will go home happy. Who better than the game masters themselves to help you pick your Los Angeles virtual reality escape room adventure?
